“Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” Mark Twain
February 17th was National Random Acts of Kindness Day. I spent that day brainstorming ideas and putting simple and thoughtful ways to show kindness as a family. I took extra thought to ensure the ideas can be easily done with the help of little ones. I am a big advocate to involve kids (or grandkids) to instill kindness into their little hearts. Last week we these in action. Here are a few ideas and even a couple of a free downloads for you!
Here are 10 Simple Ways to Show Random Acts of Kindness
1.Take a “Load Off”!
Help someone in a practical way by providing quarters for a load of laundry and taking a “load” off their day- literally! Here are the supplies you’ll need:
- Quarters
- Scissors
- Ribbon/String
- Sandwhich bags

This act of kindness takes less than 5 minutes to put together. Place the cost of one load in the sandwhich bag, along with the downloaded printable, and place them in a laundromat. My kiddos cut and bagged all the items – it was fast and they were glad to take part in the project.
Depending on where you live, a load is around $1.50. For under $5, you can sponsor three joyful surprises!
2. Mercy on the Mama!
Being a mama can be tough! Do something nice for a mom you know. It can be any mom that comes to your mind – perhaps one who has recently had a rough time – it’s guaranteed to brighten her day! Here are a few ways:
- Babysit her kids for free!
- Buy her some flowers!
- Buy her coffee just the way she likes it!
- Get/Make her an encouragement card!
3. Movie Night on Us!
Know someone who can use a relaxing day at home? Or maybe just a neighbor or church member you have been thinking of. Head to the Dollar Tree and grab some goodies for a DIY Movie basket.
You or the kids can pick up some goodies like popcorn, candy, and chocolate. It’s unique and thoughtful – an act of kindness they will never forget!

4. Unsung Heroes Recognition!
There are people in each community that are often overlooked for the continual and sacrificial service they provide. A few of these are: mailmen, nurses, EMTS, policemen, and firefighters.
Have the kids choose a person to draw a card for and write “Thank you for serving!”
My girls also wanted to include a hot chocolate packet and a gift card! I thought that was a really good idea so we included those as well.
5. Pay it Forward (or backward)
This one is simple! When you’re out and about this week, whether that would be a drive-thru or at a store, simply pay for the person behind you! The cost cannot be predicted but if you are always on the go and don’t have time to print and gather supplies – this an option for your convenience! It’s quick way to do a random act of kindness!
Not all acts of kindness cost money. Here are 5 FREEways to show kindness:
6. Rake someone’s yard, shovel their snow, or pull their weeds!
7. Let someone go front of you (maybe at Walmart 😊 )
8. Give someone a hug & genuinely tell them you’re glad to see them!
9. Send someone a nice (truthful) FB message!
10. Encourage someone’s efforts!
In sharing these ideas with you, I hope it will encourage you to do something kind for someone else. There are endless ways to show kindness to those around us – many are free! Let’s open our hearts and be kind.
